Long before the arrival of European settlers, the land that would eventually become Vaughan was home to various Indigenous nations, including the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabe peoples. However, it wasn't until the late 18th century that the first European settlers arrived in the area.
One of these early settlers was a man named Benjamin Thorne, who in 1792 built a sawmill on the banks of the Humber River. Thorne's mill soon became a hub of activity, attracting other settlers to the area.
Over the next few decades, more and more people moved to the region, and by the mid-19th century, several small communities had sprung up. One of these was called "Kleinburg," after its founder, John Nicholas Klein.
In 1854, the Township of Vaughan was officially established, named after British diplomat Benjamin Vaughan. The township included several small villages, including Kleinburg, Maple, and Woodbridge.
Over the next century, Vaughan continued to grow and develop, with new industries and businesses setting up shop in the area. In the 1970s, the construction of several large highways made it easier for people to travel to and from Vaughan, and the population began to explode.
